Data show the position of securities offerings at the end of each month and are available in time series at a monthly frequency from January 1994.

Debt security offerings

Data on securities offerings (bonds and bills) are collected for the purpose of monitoring developments in securities offerings (initial sales, i.e. new issues of bonds) in Iceland, classified by issuers, forms and lifetime, as well as the yield on their sale. The Central Bank also utilizes the data in its operations and for analytical purposes.
Foundation in law
The foundation in law for data collection is in Article 32 of the Act of the Central Bank of Iceland, No. 92/2019 (in Icelandic). In accordance with Article 41 of the Act, the Central bank is allowed to exchange information with public entities concerning matters falling under the scope of this Act if the exchange of information is consistent with the legally mandated role of the Central Bank or the recipient.
Securities offerings
Data on securities offerings are processed on the basis of information provided by issuers or intermediaries in tenders. Listed securities are published on the NASDAQ OMX Iceland. The offerings are categorized into open and closed offerings at the time of sale, and their total value is calculated each month.
Information on securities offerings is obtained from Government Debt Management, the Housing Financing Fund (now discontinued), banks, securities firms and other intermediaries in securities offerings.

The most recent figures are always preliminary and subject to revision.
Offerings
Securities (bonds and bills) offered for purchase on the securities market. Securities offerings can be open (public) or private.
Public offerings
Public offerings are general offerings of securities (bonds and bills) that are offered to the public for purchase through general and public advertisements with prospectuses or other forms of presentations that can be equated to public advertisement with prospectuses.
Private offerings
Only a defined group can participate in a closed securities offerings e.g. financial undertakings (banks, pension funds and other financial institutions) and professional investors. Closed securities offerings do not need to be advertised publicly.

Offerings and sale of a new (newly issued) security.
Resident / Non-resident
A resident is any individual and legal entity permanently residing in Iceland, irrespective of nationality. Students and embassy employees are exempt from the residency requirement. Therefore, Icelandic students and their families who reside abroad are considered residents, and foreign embassy employees are considered non-residents. Non-residents shall mean all parties except residents.
