Revised and updated method for publication of payment intermediation data

The payment intermediation environment has changed markedly since the Central Bank began releasing payment intermediation statistics in 1997. The number of companies engaged in payment intermediation and payment solutions has grown, and foreign entities have increasingly entered the market.

Payment intermediation statistics have now been re-released extending back to January 2023, owing to changes in data collection. The main change in data collection is that data are now gathered from a larger number of entities than before. This is the first step in the Bank’s work towards expanding and improving payment intermediation statistics. The effect of the changes is that for the first six months of 2024, turnover with domestic payment cards has been revised upwards by 34.3 b.kr., and turnover with foreign payment cards used in Iceland has been revised upwards by 15.9 b.kr. over the same period.
