Finance Iceland requested that the Central Bank of Iceland consider closing on New Year's Eve. Upon examination of this request, it has been decided that New Year's Eve will no longer be a business day for the Central Bank. The Bank’s real-time gross settlement system and the interbank market for domestic and foreign currency will be closed that day. The Bank’s payment card settlement system will be closed as well. Until now, the securities settlement system has been closed on New Year's Eve.
Payments to be included with 2025 accounts must be completed no later than 30 December 2025.Claims that must be paid in 2025 must also have a final payment due date no later than Tuesday 30 December. All transactions taking place on 31 December 2025 will be entered on 2 January 2026.
In accordance with this decision, amendments were made to the Rules on the Central Bank of Iceland Interbank Payment System, no. 1030/2020, which were published in the Law and Ministerial Gazette [Stjórnartíðindi] on 13 August 2025. The amended Rules can be found here.
