
Thórarinn G. Pétursson appointed Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has appointed Thórarinn G. Pétursson to serve as Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy for a five-year term, effective today.
Thórarinn graduated from the University of Iceland with a Cand. Oecon. degree and received a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Essex in the UK. He received his PhD from Aarhus University in Denmark.
Thórarinn has been employed by the Central Bank of Iceland since 1994. He has served as Chief Economist and Director of the Bank’s Economics and Monetary Policy Department since 2009 and was a member of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee from 2009 to 2019. He was previously head of Research and Forecasting in the Bank’s Economics Department and director of Economic Research. For a number of years he has edited Monetary Bulletin, the publication through which the Bank explains its assessment of economic and monetary developments and prospects.
Thórarinn has broad experience and expertise relating to financial operations and economic and monetary policies. He has considerable experience of university-level teaching in the field of Economics and, as Chief Economist, has overseen the Bank’s economic analysis and forecasting activities. He has written a large number of scholarly articles, working papers, and book chapters that have been published in Icelandic and foreign professional journals. He also has broad experience of international cooperation through institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and foreign central banks.
