Effective Monday 8 December 2025, the Central Bank of Iceland will discontinue its programme of regular foreign currency purchases.

It has been decided that New Year's Eve will no longer be a business day for the Central Bank. The Bank’s real-time gross settlement system and the interbank market for domestic and foreign currency will be closed that day. The Bank’s payment card settlement system will be closed as well. Until now, the securities settlement system has been closed on New Year's Eve.

Iceland’s current account showed a surplus of 26.9 b.kr., or 2.1% of GDP, in Q3/2025. In the first three quarters of the year the current account deficit was 3.8% of GDP. The goods account balance was negative in the amount of 101.6 b.kr. in the third quarter, while the balance on services was positive by 137.4 b.kr. The surplus on primary income was 6.2 b.kr., while the deficit on secondary income was 15.1 b.kr.
